Directional Drilling in Williston, North Dakota
Directional drilling, MWD/LWD and well planning for Bakken and Three Forks horizontals, in a basin where Geo Mag has documented wells.
Geo Mag Technologies provides directional drilling services to operators in Williston, North Dakota and across the Williston Basin. This is a basin Geo Mag can speak to directly: its company presentation lists horizontal wells for Samson Resources in Divide County, the county north of Williams County on the Canadian border, with average hole angles above 90 degrees and measured depths to 18,624 ft.
Geo Mag supplies the mud motors, MWD tool and complete bottom hole assembly needed to drill a deviated well and provides well planning and technical consulting. It mobilizes to North Dakota from Broussard, Louisiana; travel distance is not a limiting factor.

Documented Williston Basin field experience (Divide County)
Horizontal wells listed in the Geo Mag company presentation, with operator, location, average hole angle and measured depth.
These wells are documented in Divide County, immediately north of Williams County, and are shown here as Williston Basin experience. None of them is in Williston or Williams County. The Geo Mag company presentation lists them without dates.

Long laterals in the Bakken and Three Forks
The Bakken and Three Forks are the horizontal targets across Williams, McKenzie, Mountrail, Divide and Dunn counties. Wells are drilled to roughly two miles vertical depth and then turned into laterals of two miles or more, so measured depths of around 20,000 ft or more are common. The target is thin and the laterals are long, which puts a premium on survey accuracy and on staying in zone.
The basin is also remote and seasonal. Winter mobilization and long distances between the rig and the operator's office are part of every program, and a real-time data feed to the office is a practical necessity rather than a feature.
SourceRegional geology and development patterns are general public information about the basin, not Geo Mag claims. Geo Mag statements and manufacturer figures are attributed on the Technology page.
Capabilities shown on the wells Geo Mag lists
The Divide County wells in the field experience table were drilled with average hole angles between 91 and 93.3 degrees to measured depths between 14,016 and 18,624 ft, as listed in Geo Mag's company presentation. Geo Mag runs Bico and Tomahawk mud motors, RSS, Key Drill drilling systems and complete BHA packages, steered on surveys from company-owned positive-pulse MWD tools.
Gamma and wave propagation resistivity run in the same string for geosteering the lateral, and the pressure-while-drilling tool reports real-time ECD on long laterals. Polaris logs the data and pushes it to the operator WITSML server, so an office in Williston, Denver or Houston can watch the well.

Systems relevant to this region
Positive-pulse MWD tool
Directional, gamma and resistivity configurations
The MWD tool is the instrument that tells the directional driller where the bit is and where it is heading. Survey and tool-face data come up the mud column as pressure pulses, so the trajectory can be corrected while drilling instead of after a trip.
PWD, annular pressure-while-drilling
Real-time downhole pressure and ECD
Annular pressure while drilling turns equivalent circulating density from a calculation into a measurement. It shows whether the hole is being cleaned, flags kicks and influxes early, and lets the overbalance be held tight without giving up rate of penetration.
Wave propagation resistivity (WPR) sub
Geosteering, correlation and wireline replacement
Propagation resistivity reads the formation around the bit in real time, so a lateral can be steered to stay in the target zone and casing points can be picked without waiting on a wireline run.
Polaris RDS logging system
Gamma and directional data logging with remote monitoring
The logging system is where surveys, gamma and drilling parameters become the well record: plots, LAS files and reports the operator keeps, and a live feed the office can watch without being on location.
