MWD/LWD Services

Mud-pulse MWD with gamma, resistivity and pressure-while-drilling on a company-owned tool fleet, decoded at the rig and delivered by WITS and WITSML.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD) send survey, tool-face and formation data to the surface as the well is drilled, so the trajectory and drilling parameters are adjusted on live data instead of after a trip. Geo Mag runs company-owned positive-pulse MWD tools that configure in the field as directional, gamma or resistivity strings, with pressure-while-drilling and wave propagation resistivity integrated in the same string. The tools are decoded by KeyDrill surface systems, logged by Polaris, and shared with the rig WITS system and the operator WITSML server for remote monitoring.

Systems used

  • Directional, gamma and resistivity configurations
  • PWD and wave propagation resistivity in the string
  • Tolteq & Rime MWD/LWD tools
  • Eclipse Touch & Keydrill surface systems
  • Polaris Gamma logging software
Signal

Pulses in the mud, numbers in the trailer.

Every survey depends on the surface receiver separating a small pressure pulse from pump noise. Deeper wells and PDC bits distort the signal; the lower the pulse a decoder can resolve, the more of the well it can survey reliably.

Rime slick-hd servo pulser: pulse widths
0.375 to 2.0 s (dual port); 0.188 to 2.0 s (quad port)
KeyDrill KDU-Mini decoding unit: detection
Pulses as low as 1 psi; single-pulse synchronization

Decoded at surface: tool face, inclination, azimuth, magnetic field, gravity field, dip angle, gamma, pressure, battery voltage, temperature, resistivity, pulse amplitude and width.
