Deep drilling in the western Anadarko Basin

The western Anadarko Basin around Beckham, Roger Mills, Custer and Washita counties is where the basin is deepest. The area is known for deep gas: the basin's deep gas play below 13,000 ft dates from the late 1950s, and the deepest well ever drilled in the United States, the Bertha Rogers in neighbouring Washita County, reached 31,441 ft in 1974. Modern programs drill horizontal wells into the Granite Wash, Cleveland, Tonkawa and Marmaton intervals as well as deeper targets.

Depth is the defining variable. Bottom-hole temperatures and pressures climb, the mud-pulse signal has further to travel, and every tool in the string has to hold its rating for a long time between trips. A high-temperature pulser and a decoder that can pick a small pulse out of pump noise are what keep the directional work going at depth.

Geo Mag capabilities for deep western Oklahoma wells

Geo Mag's MWD platform uses Keydrill and Rime mud-pulse components chosen, in the company's words, because they have proven reliable, innovative and rugged and report enough information that drilling parameters can be changed to mitigate tool damage. The Rime pulser is rated by its manufacturer to 175 C and 20,000 psi.

The KeyDrill KDU-Mini decoder is rated to detect pulses as low as 1 psi with single-pulse synchronization. Bico and Tomahawk mud motors, RSS, Key Drill drilling systems and full BHA packages cover the drilling, and Geo Mag reports mean-time-between-failure figures for its tools on the Technology page.
